Adler Planetarium and David Burke's Primehouse

On Thanksgiving Saturday we didn't have an idea of what to do, so we planned something quickly and we headed to the Adler Planetarium. It took us around 1.5 hours arriving there, the last 20 minutes under the rain of the windy city, not too cozy :)

We bought the standard ticket which included a visit in the museum and two different shows: journey to the stars and "Deep space". Both of around 30 minutes.
The shows in the dome theaters were nice, but not scientific at all:) Besides, I hadn't slept anything the previous night and the fact of sitting almost lying and the dark made me relax too much, I even heard some people snoring, hehe!
One of the movies was narrated by Whoopy Goldberg with an incredibly nice voice tone and super relaxing, exactly what I needed to be honest! It was interesting having a look at the origin of some stars and supernovas.
There were parts of the museum dedicated to galaxies, the Milky way, climate phenomena, stars and so on.
In a different part we found many different astronomy instruments such as astrolabs, telescopes and more recently the first space capsules.

I couldn't avoid taking a picture with the nice style of this lady and her daughter/grand daughter.

Funny t-shirt about Pluto.

Once out of the planetarium we enjoyed a wonderful view of the city. It is a pity you can't really appreciate in on the pics, but my small digital camera is not good for scenery and Thomas didn't bring his super nice camera. Everyone stopped there to take a picture. It was only 5 pm, but it seemed a lot later.

We took the metro back to Chicago downtown. I really wanted to go to Michael Jordan's steak house. It was early so I thought we could have a table without a reservation, but I was wrong, there was nothing until 10 pm. We'll try next time, I really want to go there before we leave. The place looks awesome, big, very well decorated in the middle of Chicago's magnificent mile, which looked great with the Christmas decoration. Here you can see my picture at the door :) and a picture of the magnificent mile, even though you can't really appreciate how beautiful it was.

We decided to go somewhere else and we had a look at our places to go list. Finally we headed to "David Burke's Primehouse", one of the best steak houses of the States. We saw it on the Food Network and since then, Thomas wanted to go, so we went there to taste the best meat of America, hehe! I included the website of the restaurant and also the menu.

Nosotros tambien vamos a pagar!! Aunque seamos jovenes.
The restaurant was very fancy and modern. I thought it would be more classic but I was wrong. At the beginning people at the door looked at us like wondering what we were doing there, but people, we were also going to pay! You don't have to be an old fart to enjoy nice food, right? Since we are just going to be a limited time in Chicago, we want to try all the recommended stuff. It is already enough working 60 hours per week, plus organizing everything to go back to Europe and being exhausted...
The guy who took care of us treated us great and he also recommended nice stuff.
We took the dish called "bacon" and wagyu (beef sashimi) as the appetizers. The pieces of bacon were smoked twice and dipped in maple syrup. It was great, but still the best was the Kobe beef sashimi. It is one of the most delicious things I've tried after Iberian ham :). It was served on a Hymalaya salt block, with mushroom chips and truffle mayo.
The main course was also a big party. Thomas took a ribeye steak dry aged in Hymalaya salt for 55 days. The guy recommended this, even though there were other ones aged for much longer time. I must say it was delicious and now I regret I didn't order it. I took a South style steak because I thought the aged meat would taste too strong, I was wrong. Actually, everything I ate was a piece from Thomas' steak. He also had a big party, he ate his meat and mine, hehe!!
You can see everything on the pictures! Do you see the bread? It had asiago cheese inside, super tasty!

Our waiter went to Spain for his honey moon and for medical reasons he didn't manage to go to Madrid. He is going back there next year and he asked me for recommendations. I wrote everything for him, local places not very touristic, lunch and dinner times, good tapas places, etc.

After eating all that wonderful food we still wanted to finish the night in an even better way, drinking! During dinner we had a very nice wine, Malbec, but I don't remember the name...
We went back to Michael Jordan steak house again, but not exactly there. There is a wine tasting bar in the same building. It is called "Eno" and they have some food, chocolate and wine, of course!
We ordered two different sets of wine and they resulted to be more wine than expected :)
The night ended pretty well and we still had an hour back to Evanston by train. Now we have a hole in our pockets, hehe! but we'll start saving from now on :)

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving break!!

Thanksgiving 2011, double this year.

Once again this year we had the honor of being invited to not one, but two, Thanksgiving dinners!
Christina, one of my colleagues and Lyle, her BF, invited us for dinner in their house as last year.
Thanksgiving is a nice party, I love it! It is familiar, traditional, funny and with delicious food. I must say that Christina and Lyle are both excellent cooks.
One of the funny facts of the evening was that we were a group of 11 people of 10 different nationalities :): two Spanish, one Belgian, two Swedish, one Taiwanese, two Indians, one Canadian, one American and one Iranian. Isn't it wonderful?
We arrived there at 5:30. The turkey was just out of the oven after 4 or 5 hours of baking and 2 or 3 days of preparation with broth injections, butter, herbs, etc.
There were many side dishes as well: green beans, pumpkin puree, gravy, cranberry sauce of two different styles, one made by Christina and one by Lyle, baked potatoes, carrots and parsnip, wild rice and stuffing, made with sausage, bread and chestnuts. Everything was delicious, I tried a bit of everything. You can see it on the picture of my plate :)

We took cava and white wine to drink with the food. For dessert, we had the wonderful pumpkin and sweet potato pie of Christina, what a delight!

After dinner we played a game of "crosses and circles" by Eduard's intervention, hehe! and we played Taboo afterwards, boys vs girls.

Eduard nagging Lars for not folding the papers properly, LOL!

We had a great night with wonderful people, I laughed a lot and I really needed it. I don't know if there will be another Thanksgiving dinner next year in Chicago...even though we can always prepare one in  Europe!!

Buenisimo!
Por supuesto, tambien bebimos cava :) y buen vino.
The next party was on Sunday, the last day of the Thanksgiving break. This time in the house of one of Thomas' colleagues, together with her family and other colleagues.
We arrived there around 3 pm and there were already tones of things to eat. We brought different kinds of cheeses: manchego with quince paste, Gouda, blue cheese and brie. You can see it on the picture together with other nuts, dates, dry apricots, cashu nuts, humus and quiche. Delicious!
We drank cava an wine, of course ;)

Mesa con aperitivos! All the appetizesrs!

The turkey was pretty big and it took a long time until it was fully cooked. Together with the turkey there were many sides. The family who invited us is from Turkey and they prepared many Turkish side dishes. They are awesome!
There was rice with pine nuts, carrot salad with yogurt, black-eyed peas, falafel brought by Bilge and Tarik, salad, asparagus, etc.
David, a colleague from Florida brought typical Southern sides: green beans and sweet potato casserole, with walnut topping!

Waiting for the turkey and with the other dishes.

We had a great night together with even nicer people!
